Maggie Umber’s latest graphic novel, “Chrysanthemum Under the Waves,” is a mood.

Brendan Tynan Buck wrote these words on Newcity Lit in the latest review of Chrysanthemum Under the Waves. I can hardly think of a higher compliment. The review concludes with a terse and elegant understanding:

There is a vivid horror that can be found in everyday situations and a failed marriage is its own specific kind of domestic horror show, as the beautiful lifelong hopes for a future are snuffed out and then permanently extinguished. Umber, in her use of the demon lover theme—a theme that has always been associated with marital discord—has managed to capture the feeling of doom that a failed marriage inspires. In her moody black-and-white prints, Umber has captured what a divorce feels like, and puts it in a visual form.
