In 2016, I began working on a short story collection, originally titled The Man in the Blue Suit. Four years later, I completed what I thought was the final comic in May 2020. In June 2021, Raighne and I recorded a series of conversations as a way to begin book production. During these recordings, we decided on the new book title Chrysanthemum Under the Waves. We changed the order of the comics and most of the story titles in the collection. Finally, we decided that the book needed a new cover and one more comic.

This new comic, titled Rine, will be 42 pages. After figuring out the story, I decided to storyboard it with thumbnails. I went with the basics - pen and paper. For a pen, I used a Pilot Varsity Disposable Fountain Pen (Black). I used the same sketchbook I've been doing all of the storyboards in this collection in - my Khadi paper - Fat Book.

I've struggled for a month to begin Rine, my 42 page comic for Chrysanthemum Under the Waves. The deadline pressure was intense, and I wasn't in the right headspace. What to do? Something about making a dance video got me in the right headspace to draw Rine.

The next evening, I sat down and began drawing. Drawing with a fountain pen on rough watercolor paper is a huge mistake. Most people know not to do it. However, sometimes when you do things the wrong way wonderful things happen.
